It can suck when you must give negative feedback to a budtender.

It’s not exactly a highlight of the job, right?

But here’s the twist: turns out, most employees appreciate it. And your business will benefit from it if you do it right.

According to a survey from Harvard Business Review, a whopping 92% of employees think that negative feedback, when done right, is super effective at improving performance.

So, it’s time we see negative constructive feedback in a different light.

Here’s the lowdown on how to tackle those tough conversations with a budtender (or any employee) who’s not quite hitting the mark:

1. Get on the same page about what success looks like for both of you.

2. Then, encourage your budtender to take a moment to reflect on their own performance. Understanding how their current work fits into their long-term goals can also shed some light.

3. When it comes to giving feedback, be crystal clear about what needs to change. It’s ok to display some empathy as there may be stuff going on outside of work impacting their performance. However, your business needs them to perform at a certain level, and they need to understand clearly where they are falling short, and what must happen to correct the issue.

4. Offer some positive reinforcement too; everyone loves support.

5. And don’t forget to lay out a plan of action for improvement. A Performance Improvement Plan is a lifesaver here.

6. Finally, make sure you’re both on the same page moving forward. Set clear expectations so that everyone’s working towards the same goals.

So, maybe negative constructive feedback isn’t as tough as we think. Help your budtender and your business by dealing with corrective actions in a timely manner.
